In the vibrant heart of St Kilda East on the lands of the Boon Wurrung people, Wilgah Residence has undergone a breathtaking transformation. Once a claustrophobic, closed-off heritage house, it’s now a bold and contemporary family home brimming with colour, light, and versatility. Designed by DOOD Studio, this home balances historical charm with striking modernity, meeting the needs of a young family who love to entertain.
From the get-go, the brief was ambitious: create a space that could host epic BBQs and large gatherings while remaining cosy and intimate for everyday family life. The solution? A seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces and a design that embraces flexibility and flow. The centrepiece of this transformation is the bold green addition—fondly nicknamed the "green screen" by the clients—which acts as more than just a façade. This architectural multitasker provides privacy from neighbours, shields the interiors from the scorching northern sun, and even doubles as a casual seat to soak up the morning rays.
The green screen’s vertical battens give the home a crisp, contemporary look, but it’s not just about appearances. The addition is designed to integrate harmoniously with the original home, borrowing colours, textures, and patterns from the heritage fabric but reimagining them in a modern, playful way. Inside, bold green accents and textured stucco finishes create a cohesive design language that ties the old and new elements together. The result? A home that feels both grounded in its history and boldly forward-looking.
The layout makes the most of the modest 346m² site, packing in 250m² of cleverly designed living space across three levels. Despite its compact footprint, the house feels anything but small, thanks to a thoughtful use of natural light, open spaces, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow. The yard has been given equal attention, ensuring it’s not just a backdrop but an integral part of family life—a perfect setting for both raucous get-togethers and quiet Sunday mornings.
The team at DOOD Studio has delivered a home that’s as functional as it is visually stunning. Wilgah Residence is a lesson in how to respect heritage while embracing modern design—a love letter to St Kilda East’s character with a bold, contemporary twist.
This house isn’t just a renovation; it’s a celebration. It honours its past, serves its present, and looks toward a bright, open future. The lucky family living here has gained more than just a house; they’ve found a home that’s equal parts welcoming retreat and show-stopping entertainer.
