This is not your average Bach Pad, that's for sure...

The Bach Pad by Merrylees Architecture

If your idea of a bach pad is leftover pizza, a brown suede couch, and a bathroom with one threadbare towel, you're in for a surprise! Nestled in the coastal suburb of Hampton, south of Melbourne on the lands of the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, The Bach Pad is a striking example of how modern architecture can blend robust design with unexpected elegance. Designed by Merrylees Architecture, this bachelor pad is anything but ordinary. With its emphasis on low maintenance and enduring style, it’s the perfect retreat for a homeowner looking for a mix of functionality and flair. Not your average Bach Pad, that's for sure!

From the moment you approach The Bach Pad, the house makes a bold statement. The exterior is dominated by reflective glass, giving it a sleek, modern feel. But this isn’t just about aesthetics; the reflective glass serves a practical purpose as well. It creates a barrier between the outside world and the private, intimate spaces within, offering a sense of seclusion despite the home’s suburban location. The glass even has a slight blue tint, subtly nodding to the nearby ocean and sky, which adds a coastal vibe to the overall design.

Step inside, and the first thing you’ll notice is the overwhelming use of black. It’s a daring choice, but one that pays off beautifully. The dark interiors are complemented by natural materials like timber veneer and textured finishes, creating a space that feels both strong and inviting. The black colour scheme isn’t just for show—it also helps conceal the wear and tear of daily life, making the home easy to maintain.

One of the standout features of The Bach Pad is its staircase, which isn’t just a way to get from one floor to another, but a central design element. The staircase leads to a landing that’s bathed in natural light, thanks to a curved skylight that casts ever-changing patterns of light throughout the day. The wall along the staircase is clad in a custom black metal mesh screen, which not only looks fantastic but also hides a secret powder room—a little touch of luxury that adds to the home’s sense of mystery and intrigue.

Space was at a premium for this project, with the house sitting on a relatively small plot of land surrounded by other homes. But the design makes the most of every square metre. Open floor plans on multiple levels help create a sense of spaciousness, while smart design elements ensure privacy where it’s needed most. For instance, the bedrooms on the upper floor are shielded from prying eyes by the same perforated metal screen used along the staircase. Balconies are tucked behind this screen, allowing the homeowner to enjoy outdoor spaces that feel both open and secluded.

The heart of the home is undoubtedly the kitchen. Located centrally, it’s the hub around which everything else revolves. The kitchen is designed to be as functional as it is stylish, with black tones tying it seamlessly into the rest of the house. This space isn’t just for cooking; it’s where social interactions happen, where friends gather, and where the day’s activities begin and end.

Despite the home’s dark and moody palette, it doesn’t feel oppressive. The clever use of light—whether it’s natural sunlight streaming through the skylight or the way shadows play across the surfaces—creates a dynamic, ever-changing environment. It’s a home that feels alive, constantly interacting with the world around it.

The Bach Pad

The Bach Pad is more than just a bachelor’s retreat. It’s a statement piece, a home that marries masculine energy with surprising softness. It’s a place designed for privacy and relaxation, yet it remains deeply connected to its surroundings. Through thoughtful design and careful attention to detail, Merrylees Architecture has created a home that is both a sanctuary and a showcase of modern living. Whether you’re a fan of bold design choices or just appreciate a home that works as hard as it plays, The Bach Pad is sure to inspire.
