A multi-generational beach house designed by ITN Architects enjoys its incredible location with spectacular views over Bass Strait in front and the Painkalac Creek forest behind...
With spectacular views south over Bass Strait and north to the Painkalac Creek forest, this home is designed to soak up its location and create the perfect place for laid back, beachside living. There's an emphasis on informal living spaces where family members can come together as well as generous decks to take in the views while also sheltering from the sun and wind.
In fact, the L-shaped plan of the home is designed to create a sunny north-facing garden protected from the harsh south-westerly winds. The main living area is positioned to take in expansive ocean views while also opening onto a deck sheltered by the wings of the home, enjoying the best of both worlds.
Bedrooms are located on the ground floor and either end of the upper floor wings to provide maximum flexibility and privacy for the multi-generational owners.
The home is clad in fire-resistant timber and steel to protect it from bushfire risk. Lightweight materials were chosen to evoke that classic image of the Australian beach house constructed from simple, low-maintenance materials that will age well. "The house is designed to weather and settle into its site, as the new and existing indigenous garden grows up around it. Within a few years it will look like it has always been there", explains the architect.
Internally the materials are similarly robust and low-maintenance because nobody wants to be cleaning or maintaining when the beach is that close!
"The house fulfils the clients' brief in a dramatic form, which also wraps around the external living spaces, providing shelter and privacy. The house delivers spectacular views, while maintaining the feel of a home, not just a viewing platform." - ITN Architects
By creating casual spaces the family can share as well as plenty of private spaces to retreat to, this is an effective multi-generational home. Similarly, the home embraces its location, making the most of views, while also creating spaces to escape the heat of the day or the roaring winds so all members of the family can find a place to relax no matter the season or the circumstances.
