On Wurundjeri Country, near the historic Clifton Hill Shot Tower, the Shot Tower Terrace balances old with new. This restoration and expansion of a Victorian-era worker’s cottage by Design by AD not only preserves its historic charm but gives it a fresh lease on life, ready for its next chapter. Blending heritage with contemporary sensibilities, the home achieves an effortless rhythm between past and present, striking just the right notes of nostalgia and modernity.

The façade is a clever nod to the area’s architectural history, with its inverted roof pitches paying homage to traditional silhouettes while adding a contemporary twist. By incorporating dark cement sheeting and timber profiles alongside the original red brick, the home strikes a bold yet respectful presence. The intentional vertical break in the structure’s mass keeps the surrounding sightlines to the Shot Tower intact, ensuring this local icon remains in view. It’s a subtle, thoughtful design choice that honours the neighbourhood’s history without being overbearing.

Inside, the design is an exercise in restraint and elegance. Light, muted tones create an airy sense of space within the narrow footprint, while the material palette is rich with texture and warmth. Walnut joinery adds a refined nod to the home’s traditional roots, but with a contemporary edge that sharpens the overall aesthetic. Exposed brickwork, concrete flooring, and black-framed windows connect the interior to its industrial heritage, grounding the home in its unique urban context.

The home isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s also designed for function and connection. A rooftop terrace, perched above the treetops, offers a private escape with stunning skyline views. Featuring an integrated bar and planters, it’s an ideal spot for entertaining or unwinding at the end of the day. An enclosed courtyard and clever use of windows throughout the home provide seamless connections to nature, proving that even on a compact site, there’s room for tranquillity.
