Sculptural Roofs and Rammed Earth Walls Define this Bold Design

On a picturesque hillside in Mudgee, New South Wales, Kavillo Studios redefines what buildings can be. Designed by Cameron Anderson Architects and brought to life by sculptor Michael Ferris, these aren’t just structures—they’re works of art that feel at home in the landscape while making a bold statement. Think camping, but if the tent was a sculpture and the campsite was made from earth and steel. We don't typically feature accommodation or multiple residences, but when they are inspiring projects, like this one, we like to give you a glimpse of what’s possible if similar ideas were applied to a home…

The first thing you’ll notice about Kavillo Studios is the roof. It’s not just any roof—it’s a folded, angular masterpiece that drapes over the buildings like a giant, geometric tent. It’s light, dramatic, and almost looks like it could take off, but then you see how it’s anchored by solid rammed earth walls, and everything clicks. It’s like the roof is in conversation with the earth below, with the walls grounding it, both physically and visually.

Speaking of those rammed earth walls—they’re not just there to look pretty, though they absolutely do that. Made from compressed layers of natural soil, these walls are an architectural nod to the region’s history, where pisé (a fancy word for rammed earth) buildings are dotted across the landscape. Here, they do double duty, keeping the interiors cool in summer and warm in winter, all while creating a rich, earthy texture that’s just as good to touch as it is to see.

The materials are a love letter to the area. Galvanised sheet metal cladding gives a subtle nod to the shearing sheds that are part of the rural fabric of Mudgee. But don’t think rustic equals rough—this metal is sleek and polished, turning something familiar into something extraordinary. The pairing of earthy, tactile rammed earth with industrial sheet metal creates a perfect balance of warmth and edge.

What’s even cooler? Kavillo Studios is completely off-grid. These buildings run on 26 kW of solar power stored in a futuristic mechanical flywheel battery—think of it as a sustainable energy system on steroids. Rainwater tanks store a massive 210,000 litres of water, and low-water fixtures inside mean every drop is used wisely. Even the interiors have been designed with the planet in mind, featuring custom, handcrafted touches that keep things personal and sustainable.

Inside, the spaces feel thoughtful and handcrafted, with a bit of an artist’s touch—because, well, they literally have one. Michael Ferris didn’t just design these buildings; he also made many of the details by hand, like the basins and light fittings. Big north-facing windows let in winter sun to warm things up, while clever shading keeps the summer heat out. It’s smart, efficient, and proof that sustainability doesn’t have to sacrifice style.

The roof isn’t just there for show, either. It wraps and folds in a way that feels protective, almost like it’s giving the buildings a hug. It lets light in where it’s needed, keeps harsh sun out where it’s not, and creates a connection to the outdoors without leaving you exposed. It’s a little like camping, but much more glamorous—and with proper walls.

Kavillo Studios isn’t just about being beautiful, though it absolutely is. It’s about showing how architecture can connect with nature, tell a story, and be something more than just a place to stay. Whether you’re an architecture lover or someone who just appreciates a clever design, this is a space that inspires. It’s a place where art and practicality meet, and where the future of sustainable living feels a little closer.
