With a stunning location overlooking one of Australia’s most famous beaches, the sands of Surfers Paradise, High Tide is an apartment that had the makings of a beautiful home. It just needed some assistance…
Bones Studio was asked to update the apartment to better suit the needs of the owners. The first thing the architects noticed? The apartment was filled with luxurious materials, all beautiful individually, but together they were a bit too much for the client’s tastes and felt overwhelming when combined with the client’s art.
A key part of the renovation was paring back the material palette. Selecting a smaller range of natural finishes to create a more calming palette and allow the owner’s art collection and the panoramic views to shine.
The other major gripe was the kitchen. Cooking facilities were squeezed into a small butler’s pantry with no natural light or view. But really, other than the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Gina Rinehart who has a butler these days?
This arrangement can work to keep the mess contained, but for a couple who love to entertain, being relegated to the pantry to prepare a meal for friends and family felt like a punishment!
Inspired by great restaurants and wine bars, a unique U-shaped island was the solution to the kitchen dilemma. The design places the kitchen and social areas at the centre of the action and takes advantage of the views. It means the owners can chat and interact with their guests while preparing meals in the kitchen and the guests have a comfortable and engaging place to relax and banter.
With more and more Australians choosing apartment living, it is important to find ways to maintain the lifestyle you love. Customising your apartment to suit your needs and desires is the way to live the high life, both literally and figuratively.
