From Neglected to Neighbourhood Gem in Haberfield

Glencoe by Amrish Maharaj Architect

Located in the heritage suburb of Haberfield, NSW, Glencoe has undergone a remarkable transformation that has caught the attention of locals and prospective homeowners alike. Once a neglected inner-west home, this project by Amrish Maharaj Architecture has turned it into a stunning example of what thoughtful renovation can achieve. It’s even sold for nearly double what the original owners paid for it—no small feat in today’s competitive housing market!

Renovations, Heritage

The Glencoe story began when the owners first approached Amrish Maharaj for a renovation on their home in nearby Dulwich Hill. After gaining council approval for an extensive renovation, they decided to pivot and purchase a new home in Haberfield instead. Renovating in this heritage suburb presented its own set of challenges due to strict council guidelines, but the end result is a home that honours the past while embracing the needs of a modern family.

The original home was a modest Federation-style single-storey house, but over the years, it had lost much of its charm. A series of unsympathetic changes had been made: the original roof and chimneys had been replaced, a large rear extension was added, and the beautiful timber verandah was swapped for a more generic metal version. Inside, the layout wasn’t much better, with a dark central hallway splitting the house into a series of cramped, disconnected rooms.

The team at Amrish Maharaj Architecture set out to change all of that. While they retained the heritage charm at the front of the house, they made major changes to the layout. Four generously sized bedrooms remain at the front, but the heart of the home was completely reimagined. The dark hallway gave way to light-filled spaces, including a central area for bathrooms, laundry, and storage. At the rear, the house now opens up into a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, which flows seamlessly into the outdoor alfresco dining space, garden, and a brand-new pool with a cabana—perfect for entertaining.

No detail was overlooked in bringing Glencoe to life. The flooring throughout the home features luxurious limestone, while the kitchen and ensuite are finished with stunning Super White Dolomite benchtops. The bathrooms, with Fibonacci Terrazzo tiles and underfloor heating, offer the perfect blend of comfort and style. These high-end finishes, paired with clever design, give the home a timeless feel.

The result is a house that feels both practical and luxurious. The thoughtful integration of indoor and outdoor spaces is perfect for modern living, while the retained heritage features pay homage to the home’s history. Glencoe is a shining example of how a renovation can breathe new life into an old home, making it both liveable and beautiful.
