James Stockwell Architects
James Stockwell Architects, now James Stockwell Architecture, is a four-person Sydney practice established in 2000. Its projects are mainly residential, along with multi-residential and small public buildings, and share "a common thread of context, passive solar design, low running costs, and the belief that architecture tells a story of its place and people." The practice's awards include the Wilkinson Award for New South Wales residential architecture.
Its approach begins with land, climate and material: the shape and exposure of a site, sun, wind and thermal mass, and low embodied-energy materials that give buildings "weight, texture and permanence."
On Lunchbox, Snowy Mountains House is an off-grid home with views over the Snowy River and Thredbo valleys. Its curved form is a parabolic curve that protects against dangerous wind uplift while collecting rainwater and shedding snow, with a cocoon of timber inside.
