Residence R

Designed by Open Studio, this tiny alterations project was conceived to improve natural light to a compact, but character-filled home. The studio apartment in the now coveted inner-city suburb of Carlton was converted from a stable in the mid-1990s. While the home still worked well, heavy timber colonial-style windows and doors made the space feel dark and dated.

The architects avoided costly structural changes by utilising the existing openings, but replaced the windows and doors to let in more light. The new windows are virtually frameless, while a single pivot door takes up the entire height and width of the old door opening. When open, the door creates a seamless connection to the home's courtyard, to increase the sense of space.

A new paint-job in pure white finishes off the light-filled alteration, bouncing the maximum amount of sunlight around the space.

Talk about a minimal alteration, but what a difference it has made to the sense of space and light to this home. What tiny change could make a huge difference in your home?
